Why Opt for Colposcopy?

At the forefront of cervical health assessment, colposcopy takes center stage, especially following abnormal smear results. Under the guidance of our accomplished specialists at the Fertility and Women's Health Centre, colposcopy is offered to address concerns about cervix appearance or abnormal symptoms like irregular bleeding between periods or post-intercourse bleeding.

Navigating the Colposcopy Process

Begin your colposcopy experience with a thorough consultation at Fertility and Women's Health Centre. This initial session involves gathering essential health history and addressing any queries you may have. Comparable to a smear test, the procedure involves the use of a speculum to visualize the cervix.

Our team initiates the process by applying a diluted acetic acid solution to the cervix, enhancing the visibility of any irregular areas. Here, the colposcope steps in, providing a magnified examination of the cervix, vagina, and vulva. Should the need arise, a biopsy of abnormal regions may be conducted for meticulous laboratory testing. While colposcopy is generally painless, mild discomfort might be experienced. The entire procedure typically concludes within approximately 5 minutes.

Interpreting Colposcopy Findings

The outcomes of the colposcopy unravel the presence and extent of abnormal cells. These cells are subsequently classified based on their severity. While mild changes often revert to normal without intervention, moderate or severe changes, though not suggestive of cancer, pose a higher risk of progressing to a cancerous state if left untreated.

Addressing Identified Abnormalities

In instances where abnormalities are detected, Fertility and Women's Health Centre embarks on a treatment journey, involving the removal of the affected area containing abnormal cells. Employing a heated wire loop termed a loop cone biopsy, this swift procedure generally unfolds under local anesthesia within our clinic premises.

Post-Colposcopy Care

Expect a minor degree of post-colposcopy bleeding and discharge, potentially lasting up to 4 weeks following treatment. During this period, it is advisable to abstain from sexual intercourse, tampon usage, and swimming. Regular follow-up screenings are pivotal in tracking the resolution of abnormal cells.
